Respiratory Therapy (24/7)
Respiratory therapy is hands-on clinical care for people who have difficulty breathing. At select MediLodge locations, licensed respiratory therapists are available around the clock, not just during business hours, to manage airways, administer breathing treatments, monitor oxygen levels, and respond to respiratory emergencies.
This matters because breathing problems don’t follow a schedule. An asthma attack at 2 a.m. or a mucus plug blocking someone’s airway on a Sunday morning needs immediate, skilled intervention. Having respiratory therapists on-site 24/7 means that response doesn’t depend on calling someone in from outside the building.
What respiratory therapists do
They administer and adjust oxygen therapy. They perform nebulizer treatments and inhaler education. They manage mechanical ventilators for patients who can’t breathe on their own. They suction airways to clear secretions. They perform chest physiotherapy. They monitor arterial blood gases and pulse oximetry. They respond to acute respiratory events. And they work closely with physicians and nurses to adjust respiratory care plans as conditions change.
Who needs 24/7 respiratory therapy
People on ventilators or in the process of being weaned off one. People with tracheostomies who need regular suctioning and airway management. People with severe COPD, emphysema, or other chronic lung diseases that require frequent intervention. People recovering from respiratory failure or prolonged ICU stays.
Not every MediLodge location offers 24/7 respiratory therapy. It’s available at select facilities equipped to handle higher-acuity respiratory patients. The American Association for Respiratory Care provides additional information about what respiratory therapists do and the conditions they treat.
