Dementia Care Unit

Dementia Care Unit

A dementia care unit is a secured, structured environment within a skilled nursing facility designed specifically for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. While it overlaps with what some facilities call “memory care,” the dementia care unit at MediLodge is specifically a skilled nursing setting, meaning residents have access to the full range of medical and nursing services in addition to dementia-specific programming.

How it differs from a general nursing floor

The unit is physically secured to prevent wandering, which is one of the most serious safety risks for people with dementia. Staff members receive specialized training in dementia communication: how to redirect without escalating, how to respond to confusion and repetitive behavior, how to handle sundowning and resistance to care. The daily schedule is consistent and predictable because routine reduces anxiety in people with cognitive decline.

Activities are designed to engage whatever abilities the person still has. Music therapy, sensory activities, reminiscence programs, and gentle exercise are common. Research from the Alzheimer’s Association supports that meaningful, structured activity can reduce behavioral symptoms and improve quality of life even in later stages of the disease.

Who it’s for

People with moderate to advanced dementia who need 24-hour supervision, secured surroundings, and medical care. People whose behavioral symptoms (aggression, wandering, sundowning, resistance to care) have exceeded what can be managed at home or in an assisted living setting. People with dementia who also have medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or respiratory issues that require skilled nursing oversight.

How it connects to memory care

At MediLodge, the dementia care unit and memory care programming work together. The unit provides the secure physical environment and skilled nursing support, while the memory care team delivers the specialized activities, behavioral strategies, and person-centered care planning.
