Hospice & Palliative Care

Hospice Care

Hospice is medical care focused on comfort for people nearing the end of life due to a terminal illness. It doesn’t mean treatment stops. It means the goal changes. Instead of trying to cure a disease that isn’t responding, the focus shifts to managing pain, controlling symptoms, and making sure the person’s remaining time is as comfortable and dignified as possible.

Medicare defines hospice eligibility as a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less, certified by a physician. That doesn’t set a timer. Some people are on hospice for days, some much longer. The prognosis opens the door to a different kind of care, not a deadline.

What hospice actually does

Pain and symptom management is the center of it. A medical team works to control pain, nausea, breathing difficulty, restlessness, and anything else affecting comfort. Hospice nurses visit regularly and are available by phone around the clock. Social workers and counselors support the patient and family through the emotional weight of the situation. Chaplains are available for those who want spiritual care. After a loved one passes, bereavement counseling is offered to families for up to 13 months.

At MediLodge, hospice doesn’t replace existing care. The two teams work together. MediLodge’s nursing staff continues daily care while the hospice agency adds specialized end-of-life oversight, counseling, and support.

When families start thinking about it

The disease keeps progressing despite treatment. Hospital visits keep happening for the same problems. Your loved one spends most of the day in bed, eats less, loses weight. Or they’ve said, in their own way, that they’re tired of fighting.

Sometimes a doctor brings it up. Sometimes families have to ask. Research in the Journal of Palliative Medicine has found that earlier hospice enrollment is tied to better symptom control and fewer regrets about how care was handled.

Hospice vs. palliative care

Palliative care can start at any point during a serious illness, even alongside curative treatment. It focuses on symptom relief and quality of life but doesn’t require a terminal diagnosis. Hospice is a specific program for people who are no longer pursuing curative treatment. Think of palliative care as the philosophy and hospice as the formal benefit. MediLodge offers both.

Paying for hospice

The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers hospice in full, with no copays and no deductibles. That includes physician and nursing services, medications related to the terminal illness, medical equipment, counseling, and bereavement support. Medicaid covers hospice in Michigan as well. Most private insurance plans include a hospice benefit, and VA benefits apply for eligible veterans.

Reaching out

If you’re wondering whether it’s time, talk to your loved one’s doctor or find a MediLodge location near you and contact the facility directly. Starting the conversation doesn’t commit you to anything. Many families tell us they wish they’d asked sooner.
