Nutrition Management
What you eat affects how you heal. That’s not a wellness platitude. It’s clinical fact. Protein fuels tissue repair. Calories provide energy for rehab. Specific nutrients affect wound healing, immune function, blood sugar stability, and medication effectiveness. Nutrition management at MediLodge treats food as part of the medical plan, not an afterthought.
How it works
Registered dietitians evaluate every resident’s nutritional status, medical conditions, dietary restrictions, food allergies, swallowing ability, and personal preferences. From there, they develop an individualized meal plan that addresses the clinical picture and actually includes food the person will eat. A perfect meal plan that goes untouched doesn’t help anyone.
For residents with specific medical conditions, the dietary approach is tailored accordingly. Diabetic diets manage carbohydrate intake to stabilize blood sugar. Cardiac diets limit sodium. Renal diets restrict potassium, phosphorus, and fluid based on kidney function. Wound healing protocols increase protein and calorie targets. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sets the clinical practice guidelines that MediLodge’s dietitians follow.
When eating isn’t straightforward
Some residents can’t eat normally. Swallowing problems (dysphagia) may require modified food textures or thickened liquids. Severe malnutrition or GI conditions may require tube feeding or IV nutrition (TPN). The dietary team works with nursing, speech therapy, and physicians to manage these situations and transition residents back to regular eating when possible.
Preferences matter too
Your loved one’s comfort matters. If someone hates what they’re being served, they won’t eat enough to recover. The dietary team works with residents and families to accommodate preferences, cultural food traditions, and personal tastes within medical guidelines.
