Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on the stuff most people take for granted until they can’t do it anymore: getting dressed, bathing, using the bathroom, preparing a meal, writing, opening a jar. After an injury, surgery, or illness, these everyday tasks can become surprisingly difficult. An occupational therapist helps you find your way back to doing them independently.

The word “occupational” throws people off. It’s not about your job. In this context, it refers to the activities that occupy your day, the personal care routines and household tasks that add up to independent living.

What OT looks like

Your occupational therapist evaluates what you can currently do and where the gaps are, then builds a treatment plan around closing those gaps. That might mean strengthening a hand weakened by a stroke, practicing getting in and out of a shower safely, learning to dress with one arm in a sling, or retraining fine motor skills after a neurological event.

OT also involves adaptive equipment. If gripping a fork is hard, there are utensils with built-up handles. If reaching your feet is impossible after a hip replacement, there are long-handled tools for putting on socks and shoes. These aren’t permanent crutches. They’re bridges that keep you independent while your body catches up. The American Occupational Therapy Association has additional information on how OT supports recovery across a wide range of conditions.

Who benefits most

Anyone recovering from a stroke, hand or upper extremity surgery, joint replacement, traumatic brain injury, or a long hospital stay that left them deconditioned. OT is also valuable for people with progressive conditions like Parkinson’s disease or arthritis who need strategies to maintain independence as their condition changes.

Working with the rest of your care team

At MediLodge, your occupational therapist coordinates with your physical therapist, speech therapist, nurses, and physicians. Recovery doesn’t happen in silos. The person helping you walk needs to know what the person helping you bathe is working on, and vice versa.
