Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is about getting you moving again. After a surgery, fracture, stroke, or prolonged illness, your body loses strength, flexibility, and coordination faster than most people expect. A physical therapist’s job is to help you rebuild those things in a structured, safe way so you can get back to walking, climbing stairs, getting out of bed, and doing the physical tasks your daily life requires.
At MediLodge, physical therapists are on-site at all 50+ locations and work with patients one-on-one. Treatment plans are specific to your situation. A hip replacement patient and a stroke patient have very different needs, and their PT programs reflect that.
What happens in a session
Sessions vary depending on where you are in recovery, but they typically include some combination of strengthening exercises, range-of-motion work, balance training, and gait training (practicing walking, with or without assistive devices like a walker or cane). Your therapist may also use manual techniques (hands-on stretching, joint mobilization, soft tissue work) to address stiffness or pain. The American Physical Therapy Association recommends early mobilization after surgery or injury to reduce complications and speed recovery.
How often and how long
Most inpatient rehab patients at MediLodge receive physical therapy five to seven days a week. Sessions typically run 30 to 60 minutes. The total length of your PT program depends on your condition and progress. Joint replacement patients often complete PT in two to three weeks. Stroke recovery or neurological conditions may take longer.
Your therapist tracks measurable goals (how far you can walk, how long you can stand, whether you can manage stairs) and adjusts the program as you improve.
After discharge
If you still need PT after leaving MediLodge, outpatient therapy is available at select locations. You come in for scheduled sessions and go home the same day. Your therapist can also set you up with a home exercise program so you keep progressing on your own.
