Rehabilitation Services

After a surgery, stroke, serious injury, or long hospital stay, most people can’t just go home and pick up where they left off. Rehabilitation is the in-between step: working with therapists to rebuild strength, movement, and the ability to handle everyday tasks on your own again. It’s the most common reason people come to a skilled nursing facility, and for many, it’s what gets them home.

Rehab at MediLodge usually involves some combination of three therapies. Physical therapy helps with walking, balance, and getting in and out of bed. Occupational therapy focuses on practical skills like bathing, dressing, and cooking. Speech therapy covers more than talking. It also addresses swallowing problems and cognitive skills like memory and attention, which are common after strokes. The American Physical Therapy Association notes that starting therapy early after surgery or injury reduces recovery time and lowers the risk of complications like blood clots and repeat falls.

Who comes here for rehab?

People recovering from joint replacements, hip fractures, heart surgery, strokes, amputations, and extended ICU stays. Sometimes it’s someone who was healthy two weeks ago and had an unexpected fall. Sometimes it’s a person managing Parkinson’s or MS who needs a reset. If a hospital discharge planner mentioned “short-term rehab,” this is what they’re talking about.

What the days look like

Therapy usually starts within a day or two of arrival. Most people work with their therapists five to seven days a week. Mornings might be physical therapy, afternoons occupational therapy, with rest built in between. It’s tiring work. Soreness is normal. Your therapists will push you, but they’ll listen if something doesn’t feel right.

The average stay runs two to four weeks, though some people are out sooner and some need longer. Your team tracks progress at every session and adjusts the plan as you improve. Discharge planning starts early so there’s already a roadmap for what comes next by the time you’re ready to leave.

Paying for it

Medicare covers rehab in a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying three-day hospital stay. The first 20 days are covered in full; days 21 through 100 involve a daily copay. Medicaid, private insurance, Medicare Advantage, and VA benefits may also apply. Our admissions team can review your coverage before you commit to anything.

Specialized programs

MediLodge also offers cardiac rehab for people recovering from heart events, orthopedic recovery programs for bone and joint surgeries, outpatient therapy for people who’ve gone home but still need sessions, and a community reintegration program that prepares you for real-world demands like grocery shopping and public transportation.
