Ventilator Care

Ventilator Care

A ventilator is a machine that breathes for you, or helps you breathe, when your lungs can’t do the job on their own. If your loved one has been on a ventilator in the ICU and is stable enough to leave the hospital but not ready to breathe independently, ventilator care at a skilled nursing facility is the next step.

This is a specialized level of care. Not every facility can handle it. It requires respiratory therapists on-site 24/7, nurses trained in ventilator management, and protocols for handling the emergencies that can come with mechanical ventilation: accidental disconnection, equipment failure, airway obstruction.

What MediLodge provides

Select MediLodge locations are equipped to care for ventilator-dependent patients on a long-term basis. The respiratory therapy team manages daily vent settings, monitors oxygen levels and blood gases, and works with physicians to adjust the plan as the patient’s condition changes.

For many patients, the goal is ventilator weaning, which means gradually reducing the machine’s support as the lungs get stronger until the person can breathe on their own. This is a slow, carefully monitored process that can take weeks or months. Not every patient will be weaned successfully, and the team is honest with families about realistic expectations.

Daily life on a ventilator

Being on a ventilator in a skilled nursing facility is very different from being in an ICU. The environment is calmer. Visitors can come more freely. Depending on the patient’s overall condition, they may participate in therapy, watch television, listen to music, or spend time with family. Life doesn’t stop because someone is on a vent.

Paying for ventilator care

Ventilator care in a skilled nursing facility is covered by Medicare following a qualifying hospital stay, and by Medicaid for eligible individuals. Private insurance and VA benefits may also apply.

Getting started

Find a MediLodge location near you that offers ventilator care and contact the facility directly. Ventilator beds are limited, so early coordination with your hospital’s discharge team is helpful.
